Masca
Tenerife · 650 m
A protected historic hamlet at about 650 m in Tenerife's Teno massif, above the Masca gorge. Road access by the TF-436 can be restricted, and the gorge trail requires a booking.
Masca is a hamlet of a few dozen inhabitants perched at about 650 m in the Teno massif, in the municipality of Buenavista del Norte on Tenerife's north-west tip. It is listed as a protected historic ensemble (Bien de Interés Cultural) and sits inside Teno Rural Park, part of the Natura 2000 network. People come for the stone houses on narrow ridges, the views down the gorge towards the sea and, with a booking, the descent of the Barranco de Masca.
What is there to see in Masca?
The main cluster, La Piedra, holds the Masca visitor centre and the small Ermita de la Concepción. The houses line spurs between deep ravines, and terraces cling to slopes that look almost vertical from the road. Before the TF-436 was built, the path down the ravine to the sea was one of the village's main links with the outside world, and old terraces, water channels and the former landing stage are still visible along it. The site was a Guanche settlement before the Spanish conquest of 1496.
Can you still drive to Masca?
Usually, but not always. The TF-436 is the only road, a narrow, winding route between Santiago del Teide and Buenavista. From 30 July 2026 the Cabildo de Tenerife set up checkpoints at Las Lagunetas and Santiago del Teide that, during declared wildfire alerts, close the road to tourist cars between 9:00 and 16:00 while letting residents, workers and public buses through. The measure is described as temporary and is activated or lifted with conditions, and the road also closes for works or rockfall. Check the "Masca hoy" status page on the official trail website before setting off. TITSA line 355 (Buenavista–Masca–Santiago del Teide) and line 365 (Buenavista–Masca) are the fallback, and ridership on line 355 almost tripled in the first days of the restrictions.
How does the Masca gorge hike work now?
The trail is run by the Cabildo through the official site caminobarrancodemasca.com, where tickets start at €40.66 in 2026. It is a descent only, from the Masca visitor centre to the beach, rated as high difficulty and lasting about four hours. Since December 2025 walkers must reach Masca on TITSA line 355 from Santiago del Teide (stop 4692, at least one hour before the slot) and be at the access control 30 minutes early. A return boat ticket to Los Gigantes is compulsory and bought separately; closed mountain boots are mandatory, and a helmet and accident insurance are included. Tenerife residents and Canary mountaineering federation members get a refund at the control. On 28 October 2026 the official page listed the trail and the landing stage as open. Our Masca ravine hike page covers the walk in more detail.
When is the best time to visit?
Mornings are calmer before tour coaches and traffic build on the TF-436. In summer, fire-risk alerts are the main reason for road restrictions; in winter, heavy rain can close the gorge and bring down stones. The gorge itself shelters a population of the Masca spider found nowhere else, so stay on the path.
What is nearby?
The gorge ends between the walls of the Los Gigantes cliffs, where the return boat lands. From Santiago del Teide, roads continue towards Teide National Park. More ideas for the west of the island are in our Tenerife guide.

- Take the bus. TITSA line 355 runs Buenavista–Masca–Santiago del Teide and is compulsory for gorge walkers.
- Boots are not optional. Walkers without closed mountain footwear are refused at the gorge control.
Getting there
Masca lies on the TF-436 between Santiago del Teide (south) and Buenavista del Norte (north); there is no other road. When wildfire alerts are active, checkpoints at Las Lagunetas and Santiago del Teide stop tourist cars between 9:00 and 16:00, so check the official status page before you drive. By bus, TITSA line 355 links Buenavista, Masca and Santiago del Teide in about 55 minutes and line 365 runs Buenavista–Masca; gorge walkers must use line 355 from Santiago del Teide and return from Los Gigantes by boat, then TITSA 462 or 325.
