Roque Nublo
Gran Canaria · 1.813 m
An 80 m volcanic monolith whose top stands about 1,813 m above sea level in Tejeda, at the heart of Gran Canaria. Access via Degollada de La Goleta between 09:00 and 17:00 now requires a prior booking.
Roque Nublo is a free-standing rock about 80 m tall whose summit sits roughly 1,813 m above sea level in the municipality of Tejeda, near the geographic centre of Gran Canaria. It is protected as the Monumento Natural del Roque Nublo, and it is the island's most recognisable landmark. Since February 2025, walkers entering through Degollada de La Goleta between 09:00 and 17:00 must book a slot in advance.
What exactly is Roque Nublo?
The monolith is an erosional remnant of the deposits left by explosive eruptions of a large stratovolcano during what geologists call the Roque Nublo cycle, roughly 4.5 to 3.4 million years ago. Softer material around it has worn away, leaving the column standing on a plateau. Next to it stand two smaller formations, the Roque del Fraile and La Rana.
It is the third-highest point of the island, after Morro de la Agujereada (1,956 m) and Pico de las Nieves (1,949 m). Before the Castilian conquest it was used as an aboriginal place of worship, and the area now lies within the Risco Caído and Sacred Mountains of Gran Canaria cultural landscape, inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage in 2019.
How is the area protected?
The site became a protected natural space in 1987 and was classified as a natural monument in 1994. The monument covers about 452 ha and sits inside the much larger Parque Rural del Nublo (around 260 km²). Leaving marked paths, dumping waste or entering without a booking in regulated hours are administrative offences; the press has reported fines from €100 up to €3,000 under Spanish and Canarian environmental law.
Do you need to book to visit Roque Nublo?
Yes, if you walk in from Degollada de La Goleta between 09:00 and 17:00, every day of the week. The Cabildo de Gran Canaria points visitors to grancanariasenderos.com to reserve. Reported capacity is 60 individual walkers per hour. The booking controls entry only: there is no time limit once inside, and no reservation is needed outside regulated hours. Residents of Tejeda and Artenara are exempt.
Where do you park, and can you go by bus?
The car park at Degollada de La Goleta has been closed to general traffic; only drivers with reduced mobility may stop there, for up to 2 hours. The nearest alternative parking is at Cruz de Los Llanos, with more space in Tejeda village. Global bus line 18 (Faro de Maspalomas – San Bartolomé de Tirajana – Roque Nublo – Tejeda) stops at the access point, which makes a car-free day trip from the south coast possible. Check the timetable at guaguasglobal.com before you go, as services into the summits are infrequent.
When is the best time to go?
Morning light on the east face and clearer air are the main reasons to arrive early; in the afternoon cloud often builds over the summits. On clear days Mount Teide on Tenerife appears on the western horizon. At 1,800 m it can be several degrees colder and much windier than on the coast, and winter brings occasional frost. The weather-by-month guide explains how the trade-wind cloud layer behaves.
How does it fit into a day on Gran Canaria?
Most visitors combine the rock with Tejeda village, Cruz de Tejeda and Pico de las Nieves, all within a short drive along the GC-600 and GC-150. For the walk itself, see the Roque Nublo hike. If you are based in the south, the drive back down to the Maspalomas Dunes makes a full day of contrasts, from pine forest to sand.
Don’t miss
Know before you go
- Book before you drive up. Entry via Degollada de La Goleta from 09:00 to 17:00 needs a booking; the Cabildo directs visitors to grancanariasenderos.com.
- Don't plan on parking at the trailhead. La Goleta car park is closed to general traffic; use Cruz de Los Llanos or Tejeda, or Global bus line 18.
- Bring a warm layer. At around 1,800 m it is often colder and windier than on the coast, and cloud can roll in during the afternoon.
- Stay on the marked path. Leaving the path in a natural monument is an offence, and fines can be issued.
Getting there
By car, take the GC-600 towards the summit area of Tejeda and park at Cruz de Los Llanos or in Tejeda village: the Degollada de La Goleta car park at the trailhead is closed to general traffic (2-hour exception for reduced-mobility drivers).
