Roque Nublo hike
Roque Nublo hike

A short summit walk in central Gran Canaria from the Degollada de La Goleta to the 80 m basalt monolith at 1,813 m: 1.5 km each way, or a 4.5 km loop. Daytime access needs an online slot booking.

The Roque Nublo hike is the classic short walk in the summits of Gran Canaria, in the municipality of Tejeda. According to the official Canary Islands route sheet, the path leaves the GC-600 at km 11.3 (Mirador de La Goleta) and covers 1.5 km to the foot of Roque Nublo, a volcanic monolith that rises 80 m above its base to 1,813 m above sea level. A 4.5 km circular version, estimated at about 2.5 hours with 168 m of climbing, loops around the base of the plateau before going up. Since 2025, entry between 09:00 and 17:00 must be booked in advance.

How long is the Roque Nublo trail?

The official route sheet published by the Canary Islands tourism board with the Canarian Mountaineering Federation gives 1.5 km from the road to the rock, and 4.5 km for the full loop. On the way you pass the Roque del Fraile (1,713 m), named for its hooded-monk profile, then reach the bare plateau called the Tablón, where Roque Nublo stands beside the smaller Roque de La Rana. Only Pico de las Nieves (1,949 m), the island's highest point, is taller in the area.

Do you need to book?

Yes, for daytime visits. The Cabildo de Gran Canaria's system, reached through reservasroquenublo.com, requires a reservation to enter via the Degollada de La Goleta every day from 09:00 to 17:00; outside those hours no booking is needed. Capacity for private visitors is set at 60 people per hour. Residents of Tejeda and Artenara are exempt. Breaking the rules can lead to fines of €100–3,000 under national biodiversity law, so stay on the marked path.

Where do you park, and is there a bus?

Roadside parking at the Degollada de La Goleta has been removed, except short stays (up to 2 hours) for people with reduced mobility. The nearest car park is Cruz de los Llanos, about a 1-hour walk from the trail, or around 10 minutes on bus line 18, which also connects Tejeda and Maspalomas with the trailhead. Parking in Tejeda village means a much longer walk (about 15 km, around 4 hours one way), so the bus is the practical option.

What makes this place special?

The official sheet lists four layers of protection: Roque Nublo Natural Monument, Nublo Rural Park, a Special Area of Conservation, and the Gran Canaria Biosphere Reserve. The area was declared protected in 1987 and a rural park seven years later. Geologically, Roque Nublo is a remnant of the Roque Nublo stratovolcano, which formed around 4.6 million years ago; erosion has left its harder core standing. For the island's pre-Hispanic people it was a sacred site, and the folk song Sombras del Nublo by Néstor Álamo still celebrates it.

When is the best time to go?

  • Early or late in the day gives softer light and fewer people; booking slots fill fast in high season.
  • Weather: the route sheet warns to take care in rain and strong wind. At around 1,600–1,800 m it can be cold and cloudy even when the coast is sunny, so bring a warm layer, hat and water.
  • Phone signal is intermittent; walk with company.

From the plateau, on clear days you can see Tenerife's Teide across the sea. Combine the hike with the old town of Vegueta in Las Palmas or the Maspalomas dunes on the same island, or read more about Gran Canaria.
